I had been quarantined in my hometown of McMinnville, TN for about a month when I made this song up. Being a musician, I’m the furthest thing from “essential,” but many of my family and closest friends are. I’ve been staying busy mostly with chores around the farm and I wrote the bulk of this song while painting a fence one afternoon. I wanted it to be the kind of song that helps people who might be feeling disregarded and under-appreciated in a time like this. Its a rotten situation we’ve found ourselves in, and this song won’t make it better, but hopefully it will remind me to treat everyone with compassion and respect, not just in this tumultuous time, but later on as well.

The thing about this song that delighted me most was the process. I wrote the bulk of it that afternoon, but it took a community to make it what it is now. Friends and family alike put time in to help me edit and polish the song. Huge thanks go out to Stephen Roberts, Cricket Davis, and Javi Jones for helping me figure out what I want to say, Daniel Dolive of Dolive Sound for mixing and mastering the song and adding percussion, Camilla Hester for taking the cover photo, and lastly, my mom, Dawn Winton, for putting the art and title together. Even though I wasn’t able to see most of these people, we came together as a community to get the song strong enough to stand and I couldn’t be more grateful to all of them.
